The importance of clear copy and instructions on websites


Have you ever landed on a website where you did not know where to click to reach the content you were looking for, how to submit an inquiry, or whether you had successfully placed an order because you received no notification?

Instructions and calls to action (CTA) 

Clear instructions and calls to action (CTAs) lead the user from interest to action. Any ambiguity can break the flow and jeopardize conversion. User experience research shows that people naturally follow simple and clear solutions: clear CTAs reduce cognitive load and make decisions easier (Nielsen Norman Group, 2021). 

That is precisely why building effective CTAs is more than just a technical task: it is psychological and marketing design that enables the user to take the next step without doubt and deliver the desired outcomes for the company.

According to research by Benjamin Ball Associates, there are three key mistakes: too much technical jargon, sentences and paragraphs that are too long, and unclear or hidden CTAs. Complex terms confuse users, long sentences make reading harder, and hidden calls to action prevent the desired interaction from happening. Identifying and correcting these mistakes improves the user experience and the effectiveness of the website. 

How to design clear copy and instructions 

  • Clear messages and active verbs reduce user effort and encourage immediate action. 

  • Short, scannable paragraphs with highlighted information enable rapid content scanning. 

  • Test: A/B tests, observation, and feedback ensure that the copy is tailored to the real needs of your users. 

Following these tips ensures that the website not only informs, but also clearly guides the user, builds trust, and increases the likelihood of desired interactions, which is reflected in a better user experience and improved business outcomes.
