Migration from VMware to Proxmox using Veeam


Over the past decade, many companies have built their virtualization infrastructure on the VMware ESXi hypervisor, primarily due to the availability of the free edition. Transition in practice 

In practice, we adapt the transition from VMware to Proxmox Virtual Environment to the constraints of small and mid-sized IT environments, where additional infrastructure is typically not available. The migration flow is therefore designed to keep key systems operating smoothly throughout the entire process. 

To perform the migration, we use temporarily prepared servers installed on the client’s premises. On these, virtual machines are restored from backups into the new environment using Veeam Backup & Replication. This approach enables controlled system conversion without changes to the production servers. 

While the Proxmox environment is being prepared and configured on the primary servers, production systems run on the temporary infrastructure. This gives the technical team sufficient time to verify settings, service operation, and environment stability without time pressure. 

Once the new infrastructure is ready, the virtual machines are moved into the production environment, all services are validated, and regular backup is established. After completion, the temporary infrastructure is removed and the client continues operations in a stable, consolidated Proxmox environment.
